West Virginia Governor Jim Justice nominates Gayle Manchin as co-chair of ARC

ARC's mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen the Appalachian Region's economy.

Manchin has been a member of ARC since 2017 most recently serving as Federal Co-Chair under the Trump Administration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Joe Biden on Friday nominated Gayle Conelly Manchin, wife of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va), as a key member of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the White House announced.

If confirmed by the Senate, Manchin would serve as federal co-chair of the commission, which aims to foster economic development in the Appalachian region. Manchin previously served in the role from 2017 to 2021 under the Trump administration.

Manchin is the president of the West Virginia University Foundation and has been involved in a number of economic development initiatives in the state. She is also the co-founder of the Country Roads Angel Network, which provides funding to early-stage companies in West Virginia.

In a statement, the White House said that Manchin is "a proven leader with a deep understanding of the Appalachian region and its economic challenges." The statement also said that Manchin is "committed to working with local leaders to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and expand access to education and healthcare."

The ARC is a federal-state partnership that works with local leaders to develop and implement economic development projects in the Appalachian region. The commission has invested more than $2 billion in the region since its creation in 1965.
